Ten years ago, Ng Mee Khoon, 36, started a career in hairdressing and went on to hone her skills with professional hair academies locally and abroad.  Ng, a Hakka who hails from Ipoh, had a successful hairdressing career in Singapore but decided to open her own hair salon in Danga City Mall last year and join her four siblings who had moved to Johor Baru.  Filled with a strong enterprising spirit, Ng and her cousins, who are experienced chefs, ventured into the food business and opened You & Me Café at Taman Dato Onn.

“I enjoy good food so I want to serve good food,” said Ng about why she started a café while she already has a hairdressing business.  Ng said that her cousins will focus on the Chinese menu and a Muslim chef specialises in preparing Malay dishes like chicken rendang.  “Our cafe is a family restaurant that serves a wide menu of authentic Chinese and popular Western dishes with ingredients bought from halal sources,” she added.

She is pleased that a growing number of residents in nearby condos and apartments in Taman Dato Onn are discovering the pleasure of dining at You & Me Café.  Now there’s a place in the neighbourhood to enjoy satisfying meals with seafood dishes like Sweet & Sour Fish, Fried Mussels in Hoisin Sauce, Butter Prawns and Salted Egg Squids and homemade-style soups like bitter-gourd soup or salted vegetable soup prepared in traditional Chinese recipes.

The menu also has a variety of flavours in Assam Prawns, Claypot Curry Prawns, Tom Yam Soup, Herbal Chicken, Creamy Curry Chicken and Rendang Chicken to please the Malaysian palate.

In addition to the seafood and meat dishes, there is also a range of beancurd and fresh vegetable dishes like stir-fried Kangkong in dried-prawn sambal, Pucuk Paku with Petai and even Sambal Petai.  Connoisseurs of exotic vegetables like petai will be delighted that they also serve bitter-gourd stir-fried with eggs!

“We buy our fresh produce conveniently from the nearby Larkin Central Market,” said Ng as she described their ala carte menu as freshly cooked dishes to eat with white rice in “chee chau” (Cantonese for ‘cook and stir-fried’) meals.

She said fried rice and noodles are available in a wide variety of flavours and combinations that range from Kampung Fried Rice, Salted Fish Fried Rice, Rendang Chicken Rice to Siong Ku Yee Mee, Cantonese for Yee Mee noodles with two types of mushrooms.

Ng is particularly proud of their Western favourites like Fish & Chips and Grilled Chicken Chop in Mushroom sauce and mouth-watering new items they add to the menu regularly like Grilled Fish topped with Lemon Garlic Butter Sauce, Australian Sirloin Steak with Calvados Sauce and Australian Lamb Shoulder with Rosemary Mint Sauce.

Don’t be surprised if meals are served in Hello Kitty themed crockery because the café décor is dedicated to Hello Kitty, her daughter’s favourite cartoon character!
