The
Breast Cancer Support Group (BCSG) Johor Baru celebrated breast cancer
awareness month with their Vive la Vie
Wellness Carnival recently.

The
carnival was organised with health talks, a kids’ fun fair, a handicraft sale
and activities like story-telling, decorating gingerbread man cookies and
making sushi rolls.
“Today’s
gathering is a good example of our Asian family values,” said Johor Baru Member of Parliament and patron of BCSG,
Tan Sri Datuk Seri Shahrir Abd Samad.
Shahrir, who was present with his wife, Puan Sri Datin
Sharizan Abdullah, said that the essence of being Asian was the extended family
where the older generation was just as valued as the future generation.

Parents and
grandparents watched preschool children of Treetops Montessori School, aged 3
to 7, who performed Louis Armstrong’s, “What a Wonderful World” and also danced
along with the members of BCSG JB.
President
of BCSG JB, Doris Boo, said that the health talks and Breast Self Examination
(BSE) sessions were organized for visitors to understand more about the disease
and to practice BSE regularly for early detection.
“We are
aware of how painful the breast cancer journey can be and we choose to share
our stories so that we can give hope and encouragement to newly diagnosed
patients,” she added.

After the
children’s delightful performance, the members of BCSG rewarded each child with
a pink colour balloon and in return, each child presented the ladies with a cake
of handcrafted soap.
"We
want our children to be involved with the community and it’s our privilege to
support BCSG through Treetops Helping Hands, a volunteer group of mothers,”
said Treetops Montessori principal, Andrea Chen.
She
explained that the proceeds from the sale of T-shirts printed with pictures
created by Treetops’ children on the themes, Life is Beautiful, Love Life and
Hold on to Hope, will be donated to BCSG for needy members to buy prosthetic
bras and health supplements.
