"I Luv Gunung Pulai" clean-up campaign

Koperasi Sri Sekawan Kulaijaya Berhad, a cooperative made up of members in the local community of Kampung Sri Gunung Pulai, Kulai, is the first entity in Johor to be involved with the “Clean Up the World” Community.

Last weekend, some 1,500 volunteers participated in the Clean Up the World event at Gunung Pulai, a popular hiking and picnic spot in Johor.

A tagline, “I Luv G. Pulai” was adopted to commemorate this inaugural event that will continue with similar monthly clean-up events fixed for every fourth Sunday of the month.

This event created a significant impact, not only to the local community but also to international and local tourists who frequent Gunung Pulai for hikes and picnics.

At the end of a 3-hour clean up activity, a total of 290 kg of rubbish was collected by volunteers.

Officiated by Johor State Exco for Environment and Health, Datuk Haji Ayub Rahmat, this event aims to inculcate good habits and a positive attitude towards preserving and conserving the natural beauty and fresh air of Gunung Pulai for everyone to enjoy.

The “Clean Up the World, I Luv G.Pulai” event is a good example of a community engagement and empowerment programme that has created a sustainable path for the local community.

Spearheaded by Koperasi Sri Sekawan Kulaijaya Berhad, the programme is fully supported by Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA), Jabatan Perhutanan, Majlis Perbandaran Kulai, as well as local and state agencies.

Clean Up the World is a community-based environmental campaign that inspires and empowers communities from every corner of the globe to clean up, fix up and conserve their environment.

Now in its 22nd year, Clean Up the World, held in conjunction with the United Nations Environment Programme, mobilises an estimated 35 million volunteers from 130 countries annually, making it one of the largest community-based environmental campaigns in the world.

Since the first Clean Up the World campaign in 1993, the improvements achieved due to the efforts of millions of concerned volunteers around the world have been astounding.

The theme for 2015, “Our Place – Our Planet – Our Responsibility,” highlights how local action taken by every community and volunteer in the Clean Up the World activity, has a global impact.
