Techworld opens at Berjaya Waterfront

With the hope of winning vouchers for an opportunity to buy their favourite handphone brand at a hefty 50% discount, members of the public started to queue in front of the Berjaya Waterfront Mall as early as 6.30am!

Techworld was officially launched at Berjaya Waterfront Mall

This special offer is in conjunction with the grand opening of Techworld, a duty-free one-stop-centre for leading local and international brands of electronic gadgets, on Level 2 of Berjaya Waterfront Mall.

The brands represented by the 25 tenants in Techworld include Samsung, Vivo, Oppo, Huawei, Apple, Honor, HP, Lenovo, Acer, Sony and MSI.

Techworld will also house Malaysia’s first Xiaomi concept store, one of China’s leading mobile and smartphone electronics brands.

With each passing hour, the crowd swelled and by the time I arrive at the mall, a long and winding queue is snaking around the ground floor concourse, patiently waiting for the registrations and the chance to enjoy this generous deal.

Just before Ramadan last year, I met with Berjaya Waterfront Senior General Manager, Tan Yew Chuan, who shared briefly about the changes that was happening in the Berjaya Waterfront Mall.

I remember how he emphatically assured me about their aim to rebrand the mall and position it as a preferred destination for duty-free shopping – both for locals and tourists alike.

The grand opening of Techworld is certainly a step in this direction to offer a wide range electronic products at competitive prices within a one-stop-centre.

As I find my way to the event area, my attention is caught by deafening drums and crashing cymbals and I follow that sound to the mall entrance.

I spot Yew Chuan there and watch as a pair of traditional ‘lions’ are prancing in front of him to perform the symbolic feats of peeling mandarin oranges and lettuce leaves and scattering them about to usher in good fortune and business prosperity.

The launch event is about to start as the various special guests arrive.

They include Consul-General of the Republic of Singapore, Mr Rajpal Singh, Consul-General of the Republic of Indonesia, Bapak Haris Nugroho, JB Tiong Hua Association President, Datuk Seri Tey Kim Chai, and Berjaya Waterfront Director, Mr Avinderjit Singh.

Also present, were Pak Hartono and Pak Ahak of Bistari Gemilang Travel.

“It is a proud moment for all of us who have worked tirelessly to ensure that Techworld is on par with other international duty-free shopping centers across the region,” said Yew Chuan.

“In an effort to enhance the customers’ experience, we introduced various new safety features like 24-hour auxiliary police stationed at indoor and outdoor areas, a designated Ladies Only car park level and convenient Touch & Go parking payment. In fact, some RM3.5 million has gone into refurbishing the entire mall,” he added.

In addition, Berjaya Waterfront Mall supports the hospitality and tourism industry through a CSR Programme with local schools and universities like Foon Yew High School, Southern University College and Raffles University through internship programmes.

Some space in Techworld is also dedicated to the display of artwork by Raffles University students to create a fresh and vibrant experience for shoppers.

Berjaya Waterfront Mall is the only duty-free shopping mall located in downtown Johor Baru city and is linked to the 4-star Berjaya Waterfront Hotel and the international Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Terminal.

After the official launch of Techworld in a simple ceremony, the special guests are escorted on a tour to the various outlets at Techworld on Level 2.

The event also introduced four brand new ferries operated by Bistari Gemilang Travel that will ply between Berjaya Waterfront Ferry Terminal and Batam Center and Harbour Bay at Batam Island and Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia.

Besides Techworld, Level 2 of Berjaya Waterfront Mall also houses ferry ticketing counters and a VIP Lounge for ferry passengers.

With ferry arrivals and departures located on Level 2 of the mall, the outlets at Techworld will enjoy easy customer access.
