Pulai Springs' own Bazaar Ramadan

The thought, “I don’t know where to begin,” crosses my mind as I look at the buffet spread around some 15 stalls, set up both indoors and outdoors, at the Gleneagles Terrace Restaurant.

Pulai Springs Resort is presenting their own bazaar Ramadan themed, buffet Citra ala Bazar, with a sumptuous spread of mouthwatering breaking-of-fast meals in six different menus from May 19 to June 13.

Senior Sous Chef Rusle Ahmad and his culinary team have added a wide range of local and international specialties to the popular picks at Ramadan bazaars to serve more than 100 must-have buka puasa dishes.

These buka puasa favourites range from local salads, pickles, meat, poultry, seafood, to barbecue and carving stations, desserts and drinks.

Roasted Lamb Kuzi to savour with fragrant briyani rice
There’s truly something for everyone; from hot and spicy dishes in Middle Eastern, Thai and Kelantanese cuisine to cool and delightful desserts and thirst-quenching drinks.

Speaking of drinks, I’m sure you will not miss all-time favourite, Teh Tarik or local pulled tea. Be sure to try refreshing Coconut Shake, a delicious dessert made popular at Klebang, Melaka!

In addition to piquant pickles, there are also appetizing Malaysian and Thai salads in a variety of kerabu salads and a range of fresh local greens like ulam-ulam kampong with a choice of traditional sambal sauces.

Kambing Kuzi or roasted lamb prepared with the finest herbs and spices in an authentic Kelantanese recipe, is among the highlights to savour with fragrant briyani rice.

A choice of appetizing, lip-smacking sauces to enjoy!
In the hot buffet, some popular local dishes to enjoy with steamed rice include ayam masak opor with potatoes and brinjals, tulang rusuk masak merah, kambing gulai kawah and Chinese recipe butter prawns.

More local favourites served fresh from live-cooking stations at the stalls are Laksa Johor, Penang Fried Kway Teow, Kacang Pool and Roti John, crispy murtabak besides otak-otak and pizza.

Meat-lovers can pick from barbecued items like roasted whole lamb, lamb shoulder, chicken wings, sausages and grilled fish to savour with various lip-smacking sauces.

Skewers of satay, grilled the traditional way!
There is always room for my all-time favourite – freshly grilled satay in choices of chicken and beef, skewers of meat. I like how I can see real peanuts in its rich dip sauce…

The soup stall offers a choice of steaming hot Soup Gearbox or Soup Tulang Merah, a delicious broth rich with herbs and spices, to savour with sambal kicap and French loaves.

Johor specialties, Asam Pedas and Gulai Lemak are local delicacies, not to be missed.

For Asam Pedas, just pick your fish from a choice of pre-cooked fish like Ikan Pari, Ikan Siakap, Ikan Kembung or Ikan Tenggiri and wait while the serving staff simmer the fish in the gravy before serving it hot.

I like how the gravy is not too spicy because it should be pedas, but is just right to enjoy with steamed white rice.

I remember its pleasing taste and cannot resist having a little bit more… And it’s so good that I must have another two spoons of rice to enjoy this tasty treat!

Your choice of fish is simmered in Asam Pedas gravy
and served hot!
Then I join the queue for another favourite choice for Ramadan feasts: the crispy, fried snacks to enjoy with dip sauces.

Top of the list are fried durian fritters followed by fried bananas, sweet potatoes, spring rolls, samosa as well as fried local delicacies like hati ayam, pedal ayam and paru lembu.

To end the meal sweetly, there are fresh fruits and a range of local and western desserts. Just look out for traditional desserts like Bubur Durian Kacang Hijau among other choices of sweet broths.

Besides cakes, pastries, jellies and puddings, take your time to assemble your own ingredients and top it with shaved ice, for bazaar favourites like Air Batu Campur or ABC and chendol.

My tasty treat of Ikan Pari (ray fish) Asam Pedas!
The experience of the Ramadan spread here clearly emphasizes local flavours that remind diners of their favourite food from their neighbourhood Ramadan bazaars!

For the breaking-of-fast meal, there is also the convenience of a designated room for Maghrib prayers.
