TPGR offers golf apprenticeship to students

Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort (TPGR) is the first golf resort in Johor to offer a Golf Apprenticeship Programme to secondary students aged 16 and above and the first school to benefit from this is the neighbouring, SMK Tanjung Puteri Resort.

This programme received the support and approval of the Pasir Gudang District Education Department and a Memorandum of Understanding was recently signed between the two parties at the closing ceremony of the 47^th Golf Carnival for the Johor Education Services’ Sports & Culture Association held at TPGR.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by State Education, Manpower and Technology Committee Chairman, Tuan Haji Aminolhuda Haji Hassan, Deputy Director of Education (School Management) AB Rahim Lamin, TPGR Director, Dato Rahim Ramli and TPGR General Manager, Ivan Teo, among other VIPs and golfers.

Haji Aminolhuda said that while golf was once a sport that was virtually impossible for most youngsters to play, now it was made possible by the generosity of TPGR.

He took the opportunity to thank TPGR for initiating and sponsoring this programme as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility to the local community.

He commented that this was a historical moment in Johor which marked the start of training a future golf protégé and hoped that in 10 years’ time, a child from Pasir Gudang would represent the nation in an international golf tournament.

This inaugural apprentice programme with students is the brainchild of Tanjung Puteri Golf Resort, Golf Manager, Goh Hock Lai, which aims to develop a new generation of junior golf talents and ultimately transform Pasir Gudang into Malaysia’s Golfing District.

Students participating in this programme will undergo training modules in various aspects of golf operations including buggy care, the job scope of a golf caddy, starter, attendant, marshal and other roles in golf course management.

Participants will also learn about golf course rules and design, golf course maintenance as well as basic training in playing golf such as the correct posture and swing to tee off.

Through this programme, TPGR aims to equip the youths with hands-on training and experience and also prepare them to embark on a career in the golf industry.

The award-winning TPGR was developed in 1990 with three international standard championship golf courses – each with an identity of its own – the Plantation Course, Village Course and Straits Course.

The resort also has a two-tier 52-bay driving range situated next to the clubhouse as well as a practice green to hone each golfer’s putting skills.
