From
the lobby of the GBW Hotel, a spiral staircase leads up to the D’Mezzanine
Restaurant, so named because the restaurant is designed on the mezzanine floor,
complete with a covered outdoor terrace.
This
terrace overlooks Jalan Bukit Meldrum, the route of the soon-to-be-ready Rapid
Transit System (RTS) that will link Johor Baru with neighbouring Singapore by a
six-minute ride across the Straits of Johor.A section of the buffet spread in the

When
I stepped out to the terrace, I paused to take in the panoramic view of the
construction in rapid progress to meet the schedule to be completed by end 2026.
When
I looked at the live cooking stations arranged here, my eyes zeroed in on the
grill where rows of rotisserie chicken were rotating automatically over
charcoal embers.
As
I watched the chef adding a final layer of honey to glaze the whole chickens, I
was pleased to learn that this is the latest addition to the buffet dinner menu
at D’Mezzanine Restaurant.Adding a layer of honey to the

While
the rotisserie chicken was served with a choice of sauces: Thai chilli sauce,
Blackpepper sauce and Percik sauce, I was pleased that this freshly
grilled chicken was tasty by itself so I enjoyed it without topping with any
sauce.
The
other cooking stations at the terrace prepared freshly made Fried Rice and
Cantonese-style kway teow or flat rice noodles.
A
glance around the restaurant indicated that – by comparison with other hotel
restaurants – this was a smaller buffet spread but it is all good for me.
This
is because I would rather enjoy a smaller menu of items that are good than a
wide menu where the menu items were just average.Freshly grilled honey glazed

I
thought that this buffet spread was ideal for small group gatherings and in
this promotion, group reservations of 15 diners and more will receive a ½ kg
cake for Free.
An
added attraction for this buffet spread is the promo deal of one diner eats for
Free with seven adult diners.
I
liked the local salads served with a choice of appetizing spicy sauces like cincalok,
and chopped chillies in kicap hitam or dark soy sauce.
There
was also a spread of savory condiments to enjoy with comforting Chicken Rice
Porridge as well as Mushroom Soup and Sup Kambing Berempah, a rich brew
of lamb soup.A platter of local vegetables to make own salads
In
addition to the Do-It-Yourself Mee Rebus stall, there were dishes in the hot
buffet that included Buttermilk Prawns, Sambal Sotong (squid), Lamb Stew,
Beef Lagsana and the ever popular, spicy Korean Chicken pieces.
Another
Do-It-Yourself station was for diners to pick their choice of cut fruits and
vegetables to drizzle with peanut sauce to create their own rojak mix.
There
was something for everyone from the range of appetizers to the cut local fresh
fruits and desserts of cakes and local kueh, as well as scoops of ice-cream to
enjoy on crispy wafer cones.A serving of Korean spicy chicken
During
our leisurely dinner, the piped-in music was suddenly interrupted by the
familiar tune for the Birthday song, so we paused to join in the singing and watched
a cake being served to the birthday girl at the next table.
The
convivial mood continued as the birthday girl brought slices of her birthday
cake to share with us and to diners at other tables in the restaurant.
