Walk down
Memory Lane this Ramadan at Harbour Cafe in Hotel Jen Puteri Harbour to
experience Citarasa Nostalgia and the
taste of authentic kampung-style food
from live-cooking stations and dishes prepared in traditional family recipes.
Diners choosing from the wide array of traditional kerabu |
In
preserving local heritage, the breaking-of-fast meal at Harbour Cafe will
comprise a range of more than 150 dishes reminiscent of traditional Ramadan
celebrations as well as Middle Eastern and Malaysian favourites, complete with
appetizers, soups, desserts and main courses.
Chef
Rusli and Chef Ehsan, together with their culinary team, are all set to impress
diners with menus of mouth-watering dishes, all designed to satisfy.
The
attractive layout of the buffet begins from the café entrance and winds along
the entire length of the café corridor into the island within.
Assemble your choice of ingredients for Pasembur |
Various
stalls are set up to serve items like fresh local fruits, pasembur – Indian rojak topped with peanut sauce – as well as
heated pots for hot Gearbox Kambing (lamb) soup and the quintessential Ramadan
favourite, Bubur Lambuk.
My eyes
are riveted to the interesting platter of colours in traditional Nasi Kerabu, rice tinted
blue with butterfly-pea flowers, to savour with ulam-ulam or kampung greens, salted fish, salted egg and other
condiments.
The wide
array of traditional kerabu or mixed
salads in various recipes popular here as well as the North and East are
presented to whet the diners’ appetite for more food from the hot buffet.
Take your pick of items to savour with Nasi Kerabu |
There are
also fresh salad greens and ulam-ulam to enjoy with local dip sauces like
Sambal Belacan, Cincalok Budu, Tempoyak Cili, Sambal Gesek, Air Assam and
Sambal Mangga or Mango Sambal.
In the
hot buffet, there are familiar favourites like Ayam Percik, Opor Ayam, Ikan
Goreng Acar Bali, Sambal Udang Pati Santan and Sotong Masak Hitam.
With the
festive season just around the corner, it’s not too early to serve ketupat and
lemang to savour with peanut sauce, Serunding Ayam (chicken) and Serunding
Daging (beef).
Chefs are carving Kambing Kuzi, getting it ready to serve! |
Harbour Cafe also serves its popular range of seafood-on-ice, Indian specialties
like murtabak and roti with lentil gravy and at the Noodle section, there is a
selection of ingredients to top diners’ choice of soup noodles.
Among the
must-have items during Ramadan is Roti John, an unlikely name for an omelet
sandwich made with French loaves. Here the loaf is cut into smaller portions.
Johor’s
popular slow-cooked Kambing Kuzi takes center stage as a long queue forms and
diners patiently wait for their portions of whole roasted lamb served with
briyani rice that was cooked within the lamb.
Freshly made Indian breads and portions of Roti John |
Meat-lovers
will appreciate that there is more lamb from roasted Kambing Golek, whole lamb
roasted on a spit, and other grilled meats like chicken and fish.
When the
door to the terrace swings open, the wind brings in a waft of freshly grilled
meats – I can see that chefs are working at the grill – along with a
distinctive pungent pong from the ever popular King of Fruits!
Fresh
durians are an all-time favourite for Ramadan and through the floor-to-ceiling
glass wall, I can see a queue of durian fans waiting for their portions, all ready
to indulge in their favourite fruits.
Chilled Coconut Shake, anyone? |
Meanwhile,
another popular treat at Ramadan is the range of Middle Eastern Shawarma in
choices of Chicken and Lamb Shawarma to savour with condiments like mint
yoghurt, garlic mayo and pickled onions.
Look out
for Chef Ehsan’s Middle Eastern dishes like Arabic Spice Meatballs and Baked
Spicy Fish served with Muhammar Sweet Rice.
Speaking
of rice, one of the rice items that caught my attention must be the individual
portions of Nasi Lemak served in edible puff pastry cups!

To
satisfy diners with a sweet-tooth, the daily dessert spread prepared by Pastry
Chef Asbullah, will include his specialties – Ondeh-Ondeh cake and Pengat
Durian cake.
Fans of durian
who may still have space for more durian (burp!) can continue their durian
indulgence with Durian Cheesecake and Durian Goreng or fried durian fritters
among other fried favourites and delightful desserts – local kuih and European
pastries, cakes and cookies.
The sumptuous
spread for the Citarasa Nostalgia Dinner buffet will be served at Harbour Café
from May 6 to 31, priced at RM128
nett per adult and RM64 nett per child aged from five to 12 years.
