Building up budding writers in Team Johor

When Nur Atiqa Ismail reached out to ask whether I was keen to give 16-year-old budding writers my input on effective narrative writing techniques, she also explained that they were members of Team Johor to represent our state in the National Essay Writing Competition.

One for the album: Peggy Loh with Team Johor

Atiqa introduced herself as one of the master trainers in a two-day Writing Boot Camp organized by Jabatan Pendidikan Negeri Johor or the Johor State Education Department, held at the Pusat Kokurikulum Kem Tasek Utara.

She also provided a Google Map to this location at Jalan Tun Abdul Razak, Susur 7, and when I reviewed the map, I had a flashback to the pre-pandemic years when I drove pass and spotted tents set up in that area for school outdoor camp activities.

Atiqa said that the essay writing competition was divided into two categories for Bahasa Melayu and English, and Team Johor for English-writing comprised six members who represented schools located in Pasir Gudang, Kota Tinggi, Tangkak, Muar, Mersing and Johor Baru.

My Johor Stories: True Tales, Real People, Rich
Heritage
was a 2017 MPH Non-Fiction Bestseller

While this invitation was on very short notice, I was well prepared to participate in the training and share something that will benefit the budding writers.

This was because in recent years, I have had the privilege to talk to adult groups, women groups, youth leaders in national schools, secondary and primary schoolchildren as well as university undergraduates in international private schools.

Atiqa said that she used My Johor Stories for teaching narratives to her SPM (O Level) candidates and happily declared, “I’ve always been a big fan of your Johor Stories and your storytelling techniques.”

The trilogy of My Johor Stories

This sent me on yet another flashback when my stories published in the newspapers, were often used as English lesson teaching materials – teachers told me – in that era when Newspapers-in-Education (NIE) was encouraged in the classroom.

As Atiqa and I discussed further details, I assured her that while I do my part to encourage and inspire, Team Johor will certainly benefit from their time with me.

I told her that the visual presentation on my journey to My Johor Stories will include helpful tips that the youngsters should adopt to equip themselves in order to produce quality writing.

Table covered by my collection of
old newspapers and My Johor Stories books

For a lively, interactive time together, I will also bring along some of my published pieces to show the youngsters and invite questions. And so it was decided that I would share two hours with Team Johor that morning.

As I pulled out my collection of published pieces, it was like a walk down the proverbial Memory Lane.

When I saw the stacks of yellowed pages of the Travel Times that I have kept since 2004, JBuzz/Streets Johor to the pages dedicated to My Johor Stories in the print issues of The Iskandarian, the official newspapers of Iskandar Malaysia, it felt good to look back on a bygone era when these original pieces of my work shared much info with readers nationwide.

As I pondered about how these published pieces may inspire the youngsters, I knew that I must share with the 16-year-olds, my writing journey that went step-by-step from writing school essays to writing copy for clients and then published pieces in the mass media, before becoming a bestselling, published author.

In a very short space of time, I organized all the materials for my presentation and was ready to meet the youngsters, Atiqa and other trainers at the camp.

An engaging time with Team Johor

Meanwhile, Atiqa offered to show me some of the written work by members of Team Johor and sent it through by email for my review and constructive comments.

In the training room that morning, while I was arranging my collection of old newspapers on the table, I overheard someone exclaim in surprise to see hardcopies of newspapers. It suddenly occurred to me that with the common use of electronic devices, hardcopies of newspapers have indeed become a thing of the past.

Our time together opened with Introductions. When I invited members of Team Johor to introduce themselves, one-by-one they volunteered their names and the schools they represented.

They were Nur Alya Hana Roszaidi, SMK I J Convent, Johor Baru, Ahmad Syameel Haweem Jaiha, SMK Pasir Gudang, Ismalina Fitri Suhaimi, SM Sains Kota Tinggi, Ryhanna Jasmine Abdul Razak, SM Sains Muar, Tangkak, Akif Zafran Zainal Fitri, SMKA Maahad Muar, and Nurdini Aisyah U’mairah Yuzri, SM Sains Sultan Iskandar, Mersing.

Team Johor shared a beneficial time with me

With Atiqa and other trainers seated at the rear of this group, I kept the youngsters engaged with my presentation. We shared a lively time of learning together as I encouraged active participation and questions.

In closing, I invited them to have a closer look at my published pieces and when they gathered around the table, they did not hesitate ask questions about some of the stuff that I had written from my experience.

There was just too much to share in such a short space of time but I believed that these youngsters have received enough input to chew on for a start. They were just starting out and have much to do to equip themselves. As they grow in knowledge and writing skills, they would go far in their careers with the right guidance.

A few days later, Atiqa shared with me some feedback comments that she garnered from members of Team Johor. She said:

“Your session was highly informative and insightful. Your expertise and experience in the field of writing and journalism provided valuable insights and tips for the Team to improve their writing skills and techniques.

They found your session to be engaging and motivating as you shared practical advice on how to engage readers. Your emphasis on the importance of research, critical thinking and creativity in writing resonated with the Team and they appreciated your hands-on approach to improving their writing skills.

Additionally, your anecdotes and examples from your own writing experience added a personal touch, making it relatable and inspiring to the Team. They also found your feedback on their writing samples to be constructive and helpful in identifying areas for improvement.

Overall, the Team felt more confident and equipped to represent Johor at the National level after attending your session.

They expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from a seasoned writer and journalist, and felt inspired to apply the skills and techniques they learned to their own writing projects.”

Thank you, Atiqa, for the privilege to encourage and inspire Team Johor to do their best at the National level Essay Writing Competition. Best wishes for every success!

Welcome back to Xin Shan Long!

When I received the invitation to the reopening of the Xin Shan Long Chinese restaurant in Le Grandeur Palm Resort Golf & Country Club, I did not hesitate to accept.

An auspicious pair of 'lions' ushered in good
fortune at the reopening of Xin Shan Long
at Le Grandeur Palm Resort Golf & Country Club

On my way to the resort that morning, I was aware that while many familiar staff may have moved on in their careers, nothing could change my long relationship with this resort since those years when I contributed stories to the Travel Times.

Then when My Johor Stories was published in 2017, the resort supported me by placing my 2017 MPH Non-Fiction Bestseller, My Johor Stories: Trues Tales, Real People, Rich Heritage, exclusively in the suites for their guests reading pleasure.

This gesture certainly enhanced their guests’ stay as was experienced from guest reactions who enjoyed reading My Johor Stories during their stay with the resort.

Unveiling the signboard for Xin Shan Long

When my book sequel was published in 2018, the resort continued its support by placing My Johor Stories 2: Interesting Places and Inspirational People in their resort suites that comprise four Executive Suites, 14 Deluxe Suites, three Signature Suites and one Presidential Suite.

While I looked forward to renewing my acquaintance with old friends at the resort, I was also keen to meet Resident Manager, Puan Jamilah Muhamad.

Then at the entrance to the lobby, I met a familiar figure who was also heading to Xin Shan Long – David Balan from the Golf & Country Club.

Xin Shan Long was reopened in a traditional
ceremony complete with auspicious lions

We joined the crowd gathered at the restaurant entrance for the reopening ceremony, along with a pair of auspicious ‘lions’ accompanied by a traditional drum and cymbals.

This ceremony will be officiated by the resort’s Chief Financial Officer, Tan Kok Leong, Resident Manager, Jamilah Muhamad, and Chef Jimmy Choo Choon Sim.

In the tradition of opening ceremonies, the ceremony kicked off with an explosive blast of auspicious firecrackers. At its final “Bang!” the ceremony continued with the unveiling of the restaurant signboard, located front and center, above the entrance.

Then the drummer struck up the rhythm for the pair of dancing lions to usher in good fortune and prosperity at the reopening of Xin Shang Long. In keeping with business traditions, the pair of lions danced their way into the restaurant and through the dining halls.

signature Claypot Napier Chicken

As guests were ushered into the restaurant, I was delighted to meet with Executive Assistant, Lynn Halim, and when I was inside, I was welcomed by F&B Manager, Md Nadzrin A. Wahid AKA Toin.

A glance around the restaurant showed me that the décor and layout remained virtually unchanged. Meanwhile the former Teppanyaki Restaurant, was converted into a space to serve buffet-style, a selection of dishes featured in the Xin Shan Long menu.

Executive Sous Chef at Xin Shan Long, Chef Jimmy Choo, was at the buffet to introduce the dishes and encourage guests to sample his signature Claypot Napier Chicken.

He explained that the Napier Chicken is Halal certified and sourced from organically raised poultry that only eats Napier grass. This feed will not only result in the meat’s good flavour but was also a commitment to sustainable and ethical farming practices.

Chef Jimmy Choo introducing his
specialty dishes to guests at the buffet

Chef Jimmy will select chicken aged for over 120 days for optimal tenderness and depth of flavour, and marinate the birds in a blend of traditional Chinese herbs to prepare a delicious dish with nutritional goodness.

Seated at the same table with me to enjoy the meal were Tan Kok Leong and David Balan who filled me in with updates on the resort and former colleagues, and were happy to say that Front Office Manager, S. Kaithree, better known as Sky, was still here.

When Chef Jimmy was able to join me for a chat, I learnt that while he was Hokkien who hails from Penang, he was also skilled in preparing Cantonese cuisine.

He was pleased to show me the restaurant menu which featured specialty dishes like the Cantonese harlok or whole prawns in soya sauce and steamed fish in Phoenix sauce.

For the convenience of diners, set menus were also offered. For a limited time, diners may enjoy the special reopening promotion in two set menus priced at RM688 and RM888.

“My happiness comes from my guests,” declared Chef Jimmy.

“When I see them happy after eating my food, then I’m happy,” he added.

While this was a new beginning for Xin Shan Long, Chef Jimmy was already brimming with ideas for dishes that will be added to the menu.

Xin Shan Long Chinese restaurant is located on the lobby level of Le Grandeur Palm Resort Golf and Country Club, Jalan Persiaran Golf, off Jalan Jumbo, 81250 Senai, Johor.

Celebrating in spectacular style

A spectacular drum show that featured top professional drum troops established in the North, Central and South of Malaysia, aptly marked the 36th anniversary celebration since the founding of the art of the 24 Festive Drums in Johor Baru.

This celebratory drum show was presented in the evening of Saturday, June 8, at the Permaisuri Zarith Sofiah Opera House, the venue for the past season of Drum Up JB! shows staged here since January 2023.

The day’s activities kicked off at 3.30pm that afternoon with a celebration ceremony that included the official announcement of the next season shows dubbed, Drum Up JB! 2.0 that will showcase all-new performances by the artistes in JB Drums and Orang Orang Drum Theatre, scheduled for 4, 5 & 6 October 2024.

The drummers and drum enthusiasts then gathered in the foyer of the Opera House for a cake-cutting ceremony and tea reception to commemorate its 36th anniversary.

“It’s a full-house tonight,” the floor manager, Chingli, declared happily when we met in the lobby of the Opera House that evening. She, however, deeply regretted that she had to turn away three walk-ins (so far!) because it was already a sold-out show.

I agreed with her that it was good to be back again after a six-month break since the last Drum Up JB!

You see, when the Drum Up JB! shows kicked off in January 2023, I had the privilege to partner with them with a pop-up store in the lobby the Opera House.

During the Drum shows, the MC will make an announcement to alert fans that the story of the 24 Festive Drums was duly documented in My Johor Stories and that they could get their own copies and have their books autographed by the author.

It was my pleasure to autograph my books
for readers of My Johor Stories

I must say that this pop-up store had given me a great deal of opportunity to meet with readers who enjoy looking over my books, flipping the pages and having a chat with me before buying the trilogy of My Johor Stories and having them autographed.

I must also congratulate them because they are now proud owners of My Johor Stories books, a trilogy which is fast becoming a collectors’ item.

That evening, as the audience trickled into the lobby, I observed that many did not pay much attention to my books. This, I am well aware, was probably because they were not conversant in English.

With Paul and his wife,
from Batu Pahat, Johor

This temporary setback was compensated by others who approached me with queries, not only about my books but for the date for my next Heritage Walk.

They are familiar with my Heritage Walks that are based on My Johor Stories in a “live” experience with me because they have been following my stories on Facebook and were keen to join.

I thanked them for their interest and explained that for now, when the weather was so scorchingly hot, it was best to delay that date to avoid any risk of any participant feeling uncomfortable or suffering any form of heatstroke.

In fact (I told them!) I have been receiving numerous queries online. So I encouraged them to drop me a line on Facebook Messenger, for me to let them know of that coming date when they may register to join my next Heritage Walk.

With Yee Lin and her family

As more arrivals flooded the lobby, I believed that the audience for this anniversary show will comprise fans and drum enthusiasts who were keen to enjoy the performances by leading professional drum troops in the nation, all in one great show.

Yes, I had the pleasure to watch this spectacular show where the Johor Baru-based JB Drums professional drum team was joined by leading drum teams of the Kuala Lumpur-based Hands Percussion, Batu Pahat-based Shicheng Theatre and Penang-based Louds Percussion.

[I obeyed the strictly No-Photography rule in the theatre, so I do not have any photographs of the performances to share here.]

As for me, it was a pleasure to meet with supporters of the visiting drum troops who were in Johor Baru to enjoy this anniversary show. Among them was Paul from Batu Pahat, who were delighted to discover the trilogy of My Johor Stories that was published in English, and Yee Lin, who was there with her family.

Tan Chai Puan, snapping a we-fie
with a group of young people

On this auspicious occasion, I also had the pleasure to congratulate co-founder of the art of the 24 Festive Drums, Tan Chai Puan, and watched with amusement as young people chatted with this living legend.

After all, Tan was honoured with the Warisan Orang Hidup award by the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Ministry in 2018, for his contributions to culture and heritage.

When I observed how Tan happily agreed to snap a we-fie with them, I was pleased to see that there was clearly no generation-gap but pure unity among fellow drum enthusiasts.

The Drum Up JB! shows are an entertaining and exciting, family-friendly showcase that reaches out to unite the community through the language of drumming, percussion and music.

With the new show dates lined up for Drum Up JB! in October 2024, don’t miss the opportunity to get your tickets for the shows and visit my pop-up store set up at the lobby of the Opera House for autographed copies of My Johor Stories.

Taste the Middle East at Turmeric

From now till June 25, resort guests and the local community will have the pleasure of tasting Arabian hospitality and gastronomy at the Turmeric restaurant, an award-winning fine dining destination in the Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas.

at Anantara Desaru Coast Resort & Villas

This is made possible with the presence of specialty Chef Waed Norddin Qerqmaz who is here in Johor, visiting from the Anantara The Palm Dubai Resort.

At the entrance to the Turmeric, I paused to look closer at the poster which proudly announced details about the chef and his cuisine and eagerly anticipated meeting him and of course, tasting the Middle Eastern dishes.

It was a pleasure to be back at the Turmeric and be among the guests for a preview to experience the essence of the Middle East by tasting Chef Waed’s specially curated spread, served for both lunch and dinner but only for a limited time.

curated menu at the Turmeric

When Chef Waed emerged from the kitchen to introduce his cuisine, the soft-spoken chef proudly declared, “During my residency here, we will not only be revisiting the classics but will also be introducing innovative twists that merge the familiar with the novel.”

Diners who wish to pick from the ala carte menu, may enjoy time-honoured Middle Eastern recipes that are served with contemporary flair.

They may savour an array of traditional mezze like Hummus, Tabbouleh, Fattoush, the nutritious Falafel salad and the burrata cheese salad with dry zaatar.

The main dishes were both light and satisfying.

A serving of pan-fried Seabass with Tahini sauce

They included pan-fried Seabass with Tahini sauce, Lamb Ouzi, Moroccan Chicken Tajinen with tender vegetables and olives, and the Arabic Mixed Grill that featured meats like Chicken Shish Tauok, Lamb Kofta Khashkahash and Lamb Arrays.

To end the meal sweetly, Chef Waed created a choice of cold and warm desserts in a fusion of Eastern tradition with Western innovation: Turkish Labneh Panna Cotta was served cold while the Umm Ali puff pastry pudding was served warm.

Best of all, these specialty dishes are also featured in the buffet dinner spread priced at RM148+ per person, served at Turmeric restaurant on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
