Mooncakes by Wan Li this Mid-Autumn

In the weeks prior to the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Chinese have a tradition of presenting each other with quality mooncakes as an expression of affection and auspicious wishes.

In recent years, I had the pleasure to enjoy an annual preview of the traditional handcrafted mooncakes and snow skin mooncakes made by Wan Li the Chinese Restaurant at Renaissance Johor Baru.

But this year, it was not possible to gather for a preview due to dine-in restrictions.

This however, did not hinder my friends at Renaissance Johor Baru from sharing the goodwill of the season by presenting me with a range of their delightful mooncakes to savour with my family.

For the Chinese, the Mid-Autumn Festival is another reason for family reunions with a grand feast and to enjoy eating mooncakes with sips of quality Chinese tea, while the children have fun exploring the moonlit darkness by the light of their lanterns in the garden.

While staying safely at home, my family and I did not wait for the Mid-Autumn Festival – which falls on September 21, this year – before we sampled these irresistible mooncakes made by Chef De Partie, Lim Pei Shi, and the pastry team at Wan Li Chinese Restaurant.

This year, 16 varieties of handcrafted mooncakes, both traditional baked and snow skin mooncakes, are available from the Mooncake Counter conveniently located in the hotel lobby, from now till September 21.

I am familiar with Chef Pei Shi and have tasted the traditional baked mooncakes and snow skin mooncakes from Wan Li, filled with fresh, quality, natural ingredients and flavours, made without preservatives.

I can recognize the square-shaped baked mooncake which is stuffed with Assorted Fruits & Nuts while the round-shaped baked mooncake is filled with fine quality, Pure Lotus Paste with a sprinkle of toasted melon seeds or kuaci.

The Lotus Paste and Green Tea Paste mooncakes come with Single or Double yolks.

Other popular choices of traditional baked mooncakes are Red Bean and Jade Custard, the jade green derived from the natural flavour of fragrant pandan leaves.

This year, Wan Li added two new flavours to their range of popular snow skin mooncakes stuffed with Golden Peach Truffle and Blueberry Truffle.

These two new flavours join their creative range of snow skin mooncakes.

Choose from Orange Truffle, Chocolate Crunchy Pearl, Coffee Truffle, Taro Paste Truffle, Green Tea Matcha Truffle, Passion Fruit Truffle, Peppermint Chocolate Truffle, Strawberry Frizzy Truffle and Lemon Paste Truffle as well as premium snow skin mooncake filled with Durian Truffle.

To better appreciate the fragrant taste and smooth texture of each flavour of these delicate pastel-coloured mooncakes, snow skin mooncakes are best savoured chilled.

Every year, I also looked forward to seeing the beautiful gift boxes for mooncakes, for their quality and design innovation because I will collect and reuse them.

And when I received this package from Renaissance Johor Baru, I was simply delighted with the elegant boxes from Wan Li that are designed in a stunning and soothing shade of violet.

Thank you for your thoughts even at this unprecedented time in history and may your team members have a meaningful and memorable celebration this Mid-Autumn.
