“To keep the landlord happy, we just pay
rental on time”
Kedai
Kain Haji Esa is one of the many shops that border both sides of Jalan Sisi in
Muar and is situated in the block under the canopied section of this long
road. Sa’adiah Haji Esa, the daughter of
Haji Esa, has been helping in the business since she was aged 16 and took over
after her father passed away. With a
keen sense of customers’ tastes, this mother of four is also the buyer who does
the merchandising and stocks a range of traditional ready-made Malay attire and
accessories for both men and ladies.
Aware
of the stiff business competition, Sa’adiah makes every effort to welcome
customers to look closer at her merchandise and is quick to offer alternative
choices to let them pick out something they liked. Applying good customer service skills and a
proactive attitude, she chats comfortably with customers to try to close a sale
without being pushy. This is because she
has to pay rent for the shop unit. One
of the worst nightmares for traders like her is the landlord asking to take
back the premises and this keeps her working hard and smart to keep the
business thriving.
