Harley-Davidson opens in Johor Baru

Harley-Davidson authorised dealerships across Malaysia hosted an Open House on April 9 and 10 to introduce new touring models, the Street Glide® ST and Road Glide® ST models. [ST = sport-touring model]

The new models that were previously unveiled at the global virtual launch experience dubbed, Further.Faster on January 26, were introduced in a media event held at Harley-Davidson of Johor Baru, along with other MY22 models like the Pan America and Sportster S in new colours.

In a simple ceremony, the Road Glide ST and Street Glide ST models were dramatically unveiled by Head of Sales for Harley-Davidson of Johor Baru, Collin Lim Teck Hock, and Dealer Principal of Harley-Davidson of Johor Baru, Lau Chye Wang, respectively.

Clad in a black leather vest emblazoned with the insignia of HOG, the shortform for the Johor Baru Chapter of the club in Malaysia, Lim personified the pride and loyalty of a Harley-Davidson enthusiast.

Established in 1983, the Harley Owners Group aimed to build on the loyalty of Harley-Davidson enthusiasts as a means to promote a lifestyle along with its retro-cool products and merchandise. HOG member benefits include organized group rides, exclusive products and product and insurance discounts.

Posted under the caption, UNITED WE RIDE, on a wall inside the showroom, were plaques that displayed the insignia of various rider clubs like the Militia Riders, Kinsmen and Heaven clubs.

Similarly, the proud insignia of various rider clubs were also posted in a collection of stickers on the front left of the glass paneled showroom façade.

Group rides and rallies will bring together large gatherings of Harley-Davidson owners to celebrate their shared joy in easy riding as well as for charity or fund-raising events at various destinations.

Some years ago, I had the pleasure of sharing a story on a group of riders (and joining them for coffee and toast!) who enjoyed the sheer pleasure of riding to their destination, the Rail Coffee kopitiam at the Kluang Railway Station.

Road Glide ST

At the media event in Harley-Davidson of Johor Baru, Tan Chee Kien, a member of the Johor Baru Chapter of the Heaven club, was pleased to take possession of his spanking new Road Glide ST, a unit which he ordered some four weeks ago.

Tan, the proud owner of the Road Glide ST and who already owns a Harley-Davidson Heritage Classic model along with a BMW R GS Adventure bike, told me that members of their Johor Baru Chapter of the Heaven club had a plan to ride to Ipoh in May.

During the event, the sophisticated features of the Road Glide ST model were introduced in a demonstration session.

At the turn of the ignition key, the showroom throbbed with the gentle sound of its engine and when its premium audio system was fired up, toe-tapping music filled the air.

The Sportster S model was artfully displayed to an attractive wall backdrop designed with iconic Johor landmarks while the Pan America Special model, with its tagline, Engineered for Adventure, was presented with two mannequins dressed in smart Harley-Davidson outfits.

Set apart from the main showroom and merchandise was the CVO Street Glide, a limited-edition customised unit of Harley’s stock models.

Every year since 1999, the CVO or Custom Vehicle Operations team will select two to five of the company’s base models to add higher-displacement engines, performance upgrades, special-edition paint jobs, more chromed or accented components, audio system upgrades and electronic accessories to create premium-quality customisations.

With a Harley-Davidson authorised service centre in the same premises, qualified and experienced Harley-Davidson technicians are on hand to maintain and upgrade the machines using original parts and systems.

The opening of the Harley-Davidson dealership in Johor Baru joins four other Harley-Davidson dealerships in Malaysia opened in Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Kota Kinabalu.

Harley-Davidson of Johor Baru is located at No. 69, Jalan Ibrahim Sultan, Taman Stulang Laut, 80300 Johor Baru, Johor. Tel: 607 – 2200266.
