LEGOLAND Malaysia celebrates 10 years!

September 2022 is a special month for Legoland Malaysia Resort as the park celebrates 10 years since it opened in Johor some 10 years ago.

A lively start to the month-long 10th Anniversary
Celebrations at Legoland Malaysia Resort

Visitors who arrived at The Beginning cannot miss the 12-foot-tall LEGO Anniversary Cake, made of more than 90,000 LEGO DUPLO bricks.

A closer look at this giant cake revealed Malaysian elements like the hornbill, wau or kite and our national flower, the hibiscus, created with LEGO bricks.

It was fun to be among the crowd at the Media Launch of the month-long 10th anniversary celebration and discover exciting and enthralling activities and shows.

The event kicked off with a lively stage show that featured LEGO characters among the dancers. This was followed by a dramatic show by a magician who showed off his skills in making a leggy-beauty disappear while someone else appeared instead.

He was none other than our host, C. S. Lim, the Divisional Director of LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort.

“For the past decade, LEGOLAND Malaysia has consistently offered fresh, fun, entertaining and educational experiences to families from around the world,” said Lim.

“We are committed to continue building on our DNA of learning through play and providing our guests the outdoor educational environment that is unique to this resort,” he added.

At the close of his welcome speech, Lim invited everyone to keep their eyes on the two tall screens on either side of the stage where a short video provided an interesting visual flashback to the many exciting activities that took place since the ground-breaking ceremony before the start of construction, that was officiated by then Johor Menteri Besar, Dato’ Abdul Ghani Othman, on 2 December 2009.

I recalled standing under a makeshift canopy on this site – then a brown field – to witness this ceremony with a gimmick where the Johor Menteri Besar shifted a lever in a hydraulic excavator to tip its bucket filled with thousands of multi-coloured Lego bricks and let them fall to the ground in a mighty crash!

Then on 1 September 2012, I was among a host of local and international media representatives who had the privilege to experience the first LEGOLAND park in Asia in a pre-opening preview.

At its opening, LEGOLAND Malaysia joined five other Legoland parks located in Denmark, England, California, Germany and Florida, as the sixth LEGOLAND park in the world.

On that first visit, I saw the garden landscaping designed throughout the park but it was in the early days and the trees were just young saplings that needed time to grow into a shady canopy of trees.

Capturing a cool photo memento

This was Malaysia after all and I remember smiling to myself and wishing that the trees would grow shady instantly for the benefit of the overheated visitors.

I even remembered overhearing snatches of conversation among visitors who were moaning and groaning about the heat from the scorching sun.

While I empathised with them, visitors must come prepared to enjoy the tropical sunshine in an outdoor theme park such as this.

My advice was to wear lots of sun block and put on a hat or cap to shield from the direct sun but if the heat got too intense, there were always indoor activities to enjoy.

While all the rides, restaurants and attractions were opened in 2012, construction on the adjacent LEGOLAND Water Park and LEGOLAND Hotel, were still in progress.

These two attractions opened in November 2013. The 249-room LEGOLAND Hotel was designed in LEGO themes for guests, especially families with young children, to enjoy the LEGO experience beyond their day in the park.

In his speech at the start of the 10th Anniversary Celebrations for LEGOLAND Malaysia, Lim pointed to the vast canopy built at The Beginning and said that the park was doing all that was necessary to enhance the visitors’ experience.

Visitors are invited to create your own mosaic using colourful LEGO DOTS and have these masterpieces displayed at the LOGO DOTS booth.

From September 15 to 18, join in a Birthday Weekend Special Dance, a non-stop one-hour dance party just before the park closes in the evenings.
