Celebrating Marvellous Mothers

The invitation to the Mother’s Day event reads: “As part of the celebration, we will have some tea and treats followed by watching a movie. We would like to extend this special invitation to you and your lovely mom or daughter to come and celebrate this special day with us at DoubleTree by Hilton Johor Baru.”

I gave this invite some thought and decided to invite my daughter along.

               

All right. Those of you who know me, are aware that I don’t have a daughter.

But you also know about Sheila Grewal, who – when she first met me – was shocked because she thought that her mother (who had passed on) had come alive again!

That’s because (she insists!) that I am the exact image of her late mother – not just in looks but also in mannerisms…

It’s so uncanny how she had also met a gentleman who (she also insists!) looks exactly like her late father… but that’s another story.

Now back to that invitation to the Mother’s Day event: So I sent a WhatsApp message to Sheila to ask if she was going to the event.

Her reply was painfully to the point: “No… I have no mother.”

In response, I said: “Yes, you do. One may have passed on but you still have me. I would like to invite you to come with me. How about it?”

And her reply was spontaneous: “Yayyyy, can can!”

Then we exchanged details to arrange our Mother and Daughter outing at DoubleTree by Hilton JB.

When we meet again at the hotel lobby and make our way to the event held upstairs, Sheila tells me that when she received the invite from me to attend the Mother’s Day event, she was simply overwhelmed with emotion…

On hearing this revelation, I’m doubly glad that she is with me.

At the entrance to the event hall, we are aptly welcomed with the presentation of DoubleTree by Hilton’s signature giant chocolate chip cookies.

Each cookie is mounted on a ‘stalk’ and a bunch is made into a bouquet and presented to the mother (me!) while the daughter (Sheila!) receives a single ‘stalk’ of cookie!

As more mothers and daughters trickle in, Sheila and I explore the buffet set up with a preview of a selection of items that will be served on the weekend of May 12 and 13, Saturday and Sunday, at Makan Kitchen and Tosca.

At Tosca, the family’s Queen (mum!) will enjoy a Mother’s Day Brunch served from 12pm to 3pm on Sunday, May 13. Price at RM120 nett per adult and RM60 nett per child. Just add RM60 nett to the adult price to enjoy free flow of beer or house wine.

At Makan Kitchen, the Queen of the family deserves a royal dining treat on Saturday and Sunday, May 12 and 13, that comes with a complimentary manicure session and a special gift to all mothers!

At Makan Kitchen, diners can look forward to enjoying a range of popular dishes from the Chinese, Malay and Indian kitchens, as well as International cuisine, from fresh salads, main courses to delectable desserts.

In addition to the refreshing Mediterranean and Italian specialties that Tosca is renowned for, there will be a sumptuous spread of cakes and pastries to spoil the mothers as well as a choice of interesting dishes during the Mother’s Day weekend.

So Sheila and I join other mothers and daughters to nibble on cakes and pastries and sample a few specialties like Red Snapper with Kalamata Olives, tender Chicken Thighs with Herbs, Prunes and Apricots, Salmon Tikka Tandoori and Poached Prawns in Pie Tee hats.

We have popcorn to munch on during the movie show!

Then the lights dim as the film (they picked!) started. I have seen the live theatre version during a visit to London but it is still fun to watch the film version of, Mama Mia, especially when I’m accompanied by Sheila.

To create a more comfortable mood for the movie, we receive a carton of popcorn to munch on!
